This one:
This monstrosity is being built in the middle of nowhere right by Rye’s Aunt’s house. We had to stop and get a better look, a picture, and as luck would have it, we ran into the neighbors who gave us the dirt.
Aparently, the guy who is bulding this wants to create this thing that is suppose to be a testiment to what one can achieve without an education. I guess it suppose to be like a living American Dream??
In anycase, there were no zoning laws in this area when he started, and he informed the neighbors that he cares not what they think. Quite a few of the custom “country” type homes in this new little developement are currently for sale.
Unfortunatly, my camera battery went caput before I could get a picture of the gate. The Gate for this place is about 15 feet high, with two coats of arms, and gold plating…the rest of the gardens have resin greek statues, and lots of urns.
Please note the angels on the roofline of the buliding.
Also the missing windows in the second story? That is becasue the homeowner intends to deck the halls with antique tapastrye like a castle. A 6 ton chandaller is suppose to light it all up. I guess the roof has steel beams.
This achtype of hideous taste was inspired by the Palace of Versailles.
Off with their heads I say!
Is that monstrosity pink? Holy crap, it looks like a 19th century whorehouse!
It’s clsoer to red…but a pinkish hued red…it’s ummm really ugly…
There are no words.
Who ARE these people? And what are they ON?
(Seriously, I’d love to know more – like, what kind of a person would do such a thing? Where do they get their money from? Do they eat jello salad at every meal?)
I Do have the guys name..but upon Googling him…nothing of any value comes up..so that part is still a mistery!
Apparently he is a self made millionare with no formal education…so lots of money and very bad taste..not a good combination!!
Yikes.
I’m fascinated – honestly.
It’s beyond kitsch. There’s something almost thrilling about such appallingness – ‘cept for the locals, I’m sure, who must be thinking (among other things) “There goes the neighbourhood”.
On the other hand, it could become a landmark curiosity in time. Like a VERY LONG time (in the meantime, arrrrgh!)
If ever you find out more about the mind behind the monstrosity, do keep me updated. PLEASE.
I have seen Versailles, and I don’t see much resemblance honestly. Maybe Versailles on a bad drug trip? There are some neighborhoods in adjoining towns to us that have a problem they call, “mansionization”. Building big (usually ugly and overly ornate) houses on tiny lots which look grossly out of place in the neighborhoods. Maybe this is similar?
WEll the funny thing is that it is being bult in a “non” neighborhood. This area still has hug big tracks of open land, farm and woods…so often a bunch of acreas will get bought up and someone starts learning them and selling plots 1/2, 2,3 acreas, etc..and houses get bulit on them..THIS is the case with this place.
There is like maybe 12 plots of land, 6 houses done..for sale signs on piles of dirt..and then THIS.
It is the third house in…and the rest..all modified capes with wrap around porches…fitting their enviorment in the woods. Then THIS.
OMGosh….just no accounting for people’s tastes….however hideous.
I can’t imagine what the neighbors are thinking in reagrds to their own homes property values.
Eeeek, only in America!!!
Oh like Kippa requested, please post a picture of the finished, eh, estate. 😉
Frank Lloyd Wright is rolling over in his grave.
That house is proof that while money can buy a lot of things, it certainly can’t buy taste.
OMG, I have never seen this post before but I can’t believe you all are dissing this divine creation.
I swoon at its sight, images of the lovely Gloria Swanson and Baby Doll and Grey’s Gardens dance through my head and make me grin.
