So Rye and I have been “house hunting” for a while. We have a huge list of criteria. There is nothing wrong with our house now..in fact I love our house…so one of the things that I am hung up on is it must be another excellent house.
But….I have agreed with him that it is a good financial move..to move.
I bought this house almost 9 years ago ..for almost nothing. Granted it was really scarey but it had great bones..being an old Victorian. It just needed major cosmetic work..which I did mostly by myself in the first two years. As a single momma with one child, a four bedroom was a great space..and I never thought I would run out of room…add a new husband and two kids later…my bedrooms are filled and I have NO closets. See..it’s cute, right? Now, it is a great little house that also just happened to go way up in value. Like quadruples it’s price…sooo
IF we found a house that was also CHEAP..and had good bones..and more room..and I liked ( like I MUST have an old house, I hate new construction, etc) and it was livable while we fixed it up..and structurally sound..THEN I would agree to move.
For what we could do..the master plan …make a bid, get the bid accepted..on contingency of us selling our house..then buy the new house FREE AND CLEAR..cash down ..no mortgage. Still have $$ to completely get out of all debt ..and have $$ to fix up the new house..all while NOT paying a mortgage..so more monthly cash in hand also. And saving us hundreds of thousands in long term interest!
Whew…it has been a long hunt. We looked at this one today. It fits the criteria. We are gonna make an offer. Cross you fingers..my life might get a whole lot messier, but so much easier.
Your current house is very cute!
Good luck on house hunting. We bought a house last summer, after months and months of looking. Like you, we didn’t want a newly built house, but an older house with character. We found one that needed some work and we’ve been lovingly fixing it up. I adore our new-to-us house!
is this picture your current house or the one you looked at. regardless, i am with you. i have had 3 houses in the past 10 years. two older, one brand new. the new one was boring. all i could do was paint. i love remodeling and would love to do what you are. get an old structurally sound one and do it over. love it. best of luck to you.
that is an adorable house! I hope your plan comes to pass: no mortage? what a dream!
Ah yes, I like older houses too! Our home is an old Spanish stucco -small, but perfect for us. I love the photo of the house that you looked at.
Wow, I am impressed that you bought your house as a single mom and then fixed it up! But, I already knew that you were one spunky, plucky lady!
My fingers are crossed for you.
LOL…ah, this is my house now…the one we are looking at…still pretty rough.
So we offered low, they counter offered..now we go abck again..lol. It’s like poker.
Good luck. Hope you get it.
Goodluck!

Those sound like some good plans! What a birthday present, a new house! 😉
